Faith like a mustard seed

"Take it on faith" "You have to have faith to believe"

"If you have faith the size of a mustard seed you will move mountains"

We've all heard these phrases. But if you ask the average person what exactly faith is, you may get a multitude of answers. Some people will quote Romans 10:17 and try to claim that faith is hearing. But that's not what that verse says. It says that's how you get it, but it's still not a definition.

Just as Matthew 18:16 and 2 Corinthians 13:1 tell us there must be at least 2 witnesses to establish a matter, true faith also requires two witnesses. According to Hebrews 11:1, these two witnesses are substance and evidence. It's the reason behind why you hope for things that haven't happened, it's the reason you know things exist that you've never laid eyes on.

When we walk into a dark room, we do not go outside to check if electricity is coming into the house, then check the fuse box to make sure the switches are in the right places, then rip open the walls to make sure the wires are connected, then examine the bulb to make sure the filiment is intact. No. We simply flip the switch expecting that light to turn on. Why? Because it always has before. That's substance supporting our hope for an event that hasn't yet happened, the light turning on. When we start recognizing how God has always moved in our lives, we begin to hope for that in the same way. That's one witness of our faith in Him.

We cannot see the wind. But we feel it on our skin, it tugs on our clothes, it takes the leaves from the trees, it move the clouds, and we hear it whistling around buildings. We cannot see our own heart. But we feel it thumping in our chest, and in times of quiet we hear our blood coursing through our ears. When we start recognizing the evidence of God's handiwork, that's the second witness of our faith in HIm.

You want unshakeable faith in Jesus? Understand the substance of your hope in Him, rely on the evidence of Him. Then, your faith will begin to grow, like a mustard seed. It will sprout roots that will begin to dig down, clinging, holding on, supporting the tree as it grows up strong and true. And as those roots grow, they will begin to displace the very rocks of the mountain they grow upon. Ever see the sidewalk next to a tree where the tree roots have moved it? That's how the mountain gets moved. Get your faith. Grow it. And mountains will do the same for you.

Tree Roots
